WHERE WHOLE-PERSON CARE BEGINS

Most chronic conditions need more than a consultation

The Care Layer brings the psychological and behavioral frameworks that address that whole picture — to practitioners who want to go deeper, and to patients who deserve more than a prescription.

WHY THE CARE LAYER EXISTS

Chronic conditions are not just medical problems

Empty space, drag to resize
Chronic pain. Burnout. Gut disorders. Hormonal health. These conditions are shaped by sleep, stress, nutrition, relationships, movement, and mindset — not just biology. Yet most healthcare encounters last 15 minutes and end with a prescription.

The psychological and behavioral layer — the one that actually drives long-term change — is routinely left out. Not because practitioners don't care. But because the system wasn't built for it.

And when whole-person care does exist, it's expensive, fragmented, and hard to find. A privilege, not a right.

That's what The Care Layer is here to change.

WHAT IS THE CARE LAYER

The missing layer between a diagnosis and a life well lived.

The Care Layer is what happens between appointments — in daily habits, sleep, stress, relationships, and mindset. It's the psychological and behavioral dimension that traditional medicine rarely has time to address. We built a platform to make it accessible to everyone.

A Growing Mission

Every course purchased funds subsidized access for a patient who couldn't afford it. This is how we democratize whole-person care — one practitioner at a time.

THE PROBLEM WITH CHRONIC CARE TODAY

Healthcare has changed. Practice hasn't caught up.

Patients increasingly present with overlapping chronic conditions requiring long-term, interdisciplinary support. Most systems aren't built for this.
1

The complexity gap

Patients need whole-person care across lifestyle, psychology, and physiology — but most systems are built around isolated specialties.
2

The follow-through gap

Real health change happens between appointments, yet most care stops when the consultation ends.
3

The knowledge gap

Science and patient expectations evolve quickly — but practitioners rarely have structured ways to integrate new evidence into daily practice.
4

The access gap

Whole-person care is often expensive, fragmented, and limited mostly to private integrative practitioners. Cost, geography, and health literacy keep it out of reach for most people who need it most.
AREAS OF FOCUS

From everyday health to complex conditions

The Care Layer supports general preventive health and provides deeper frameworks for conditions that require long-term, interdisciplinary support.

OUR MISSION

Whole-person care shouldn't be a privilege.

The Care Layer is a digital health social enterprise. We believe the psychological and behavioral frameworks that help people live well with chronic conditions should be available to everyone — not just those who can afford private integrative care.

So we built a model where those who have access fund access for those who don't.

Every course purchased by a practitioner subsidizes a patient program for someone who couldn't afford it. Grants and partnerships extend that reach further. The mission grows with every enrollment.

This is what democratizing whole-person care actually looks like.
MEET THE FOUNDER

Elaine Barretto, Ph.D., DipIBLM, NBC-HWC

Dr. Barretto didn't come to this work from the outside. She came from the inside.

She lived with chronic conditions. She navigated a healthcare system that treated her symptoms but not her whole person. She changed her career — not once, but several times — following the thread of what she knew was missing. She founded a professional society because the community she needed didn't exist yet. And she built The Care Layer because the platform she needed didn't exist either.

Her unusual combination of engineering precision, psychological insight, lifestyle medicine expertise, and health communication experience isn't accidental. It's the result of someone who refused to accept that fragmented, inaccessible care was the only option — for herself, or for anyone else.

She built The Care Layer because she genuinely cares.
